High-converting CTA words & phrases for ecommerce
The difference between a CTA that gets clicked and one that gets ignored is often a single word. Here are the ones that work — and the ones to drop.
Strong action verbs
Lead with a verb that tells people what they’ll do or get:
Get · Start · Claim · Grab · Shop · Unlock · Try · Join · Save · Add · Buy
“Get my discount” beats “Discount.” Action verbs convert because they imply momentum.
Value and benefit words
Stack a benefit onto the verb:
Free · Today · Now · Instant · Save · Guaranteed · Risk-free · Bonus
“Start my free trial” works because it pairs a verb with a no-risk benefit.
Possessive framing
Writing from the shopper’s side lifts clicks: “Get my free guide” tends to beat “Get your free guide.” It’s the visitor talking, not you.
Honest urgency
Used sparingly and truthfully: “Today,” “while it’s in stock,” “ends Sunday.” Fake urgency erodes trust fast, so only use it when it’s real.
Words to drop
These quietly kill clicks:
Submit · Click here · Continue · Enter · Go · Learn more · Read more
They’re vague, robotic, or make people work to understand the next step.
Put it together
The formula: action verb + value + (optional) urgency, in 2–4 words. “Claim 20% off today.” “Get my free sample.”
